I bought an RV042 a few years back to allow my associates (in my small office) to access their files from home. Everyone was on XP. Using the original software that came with the Router, everything worked “OK” at first. Note, the use of the term “OK” should not be considered to mean everything worked well. Some people found themselves being knocked off the system for no reason. Large files were problematic for access or download. It was not what I had hoped for but was better than jumping in the car and driving to the office for every minor file.
Then I made the mistake of “upgrading” the firmware and client software. Haven’t been able to use the VPN tunnel since. A check of the Cisco web site forum for the RV042 indicates this is a common problem. Worse, there is NO HELP FROM CISCO! The Router has run flawlessly for the few years I’ve owned it, but if your looking to setup a low or no hassle VPN for your small office…RUN to some other vendor.
Note: I’ve never been able to get anything other than XP to work with the VPN tunnel, despite claims that problems with Vista (and I assume Win 7) have been fixed.
