Verizon Router Yellow Light (Meaning & Easy Fixes)

Verizon Router Yellow Light

If you’ve ever encountered a Verizon router yellow light, it indicates that no internet connection was found. This issue is fairly common and straightforward to solve.

The main causes of the yellow light on a Verizon router include a local service outage, a weak or fluctuating internet connection, an insufficient power supply, or a bug with the software or hardware.

Sometimes, if the WiFi router and extenders are located too close or too far from each other, a yellow light may appear.

You can try various methods to solve this issue without much technical knowledge.

These include power cycling your router, inspecting the cables for damage or loose connections, checking for a service outage, and relocating your router or extender.

What Does A Yellow Light On Your Verizon FiOS Router Mean?

When a yellow light appears on a Verizon router, it means no internet connection could be found.

The root cause of this may be external issues with the internet service provider, a technical fault with the router software or hardware, or the location of the router or extender.

Causes Of The Yellow Light On Verizon Routers

When a yellow light blinks on your Verizon FiOS router, it does not necessarily mean your internet connection is having an issue.

Instead, it could indicate how well you are connected to your router. If it blinks faster, the link is better, but it may not have the right setup.

The following are some of the other reasons why your Verizon router is having a yellow light:

  • Verizon service is having an internet outage in your area.
  • There is fluctuation with the internet connection.
  • Possible software or hardware bug.
  • There is no proper power supply.

Fix Options For A Verizon Router With A Yellow Light

Verizon FiOS Yellow Light Fixes

Before fixing your Verizon router, ensure that the issue is not with Verizon but on your end.

The following are the ways that you can fix the Verizon FiOS router yellow light:

1. Check Your Connection Status

Confirm with Verizon to see whether the network is working or not before troubleshooting the router. You can achieve this through the following steps:

  • Sign in to your online account management site, My Verizon.
  • Check for any pop-up service alerts on top of the screen.
  • Open chat and then type network outage.
  • Click enter and information should be displayed on the screen about any possible outage or if there is one, it will tell you.

If the Verizon connection is working, the yellow light indicates a problem at home. This means that you need to fix your hardware to be connected again.

2. Soft Reset the Router

A soft reset on the router means that you end the connection and re-establish it. When you do this, nothing changes in your network settings or router. Follow the steps below for a soft reset on your router:

  • Start by unplugging the router. This will disable the power completely so that the router can grab a completely new connection. Wait for about five to ten minutes before plugging them in.
  • Next, you plug in the router and wait for the lights to appear and then settle into their normal patterns. If the gateway has issues with connection, it will cause problems with the router leading to the appearance of the yellow light. However, if the lights show that the Verizon gateway is ready, proceed to the next step.
  • Plug in the router and then connect it to the gateway. Watch to see if the yellow light appears and if it does wait for it to disappear after the connection has been established.

It is important that you wait until the Verizon FiOS gateway is up and running before plugging in the router as each device takes a few minutes to connect fully to the network.

3. Check Your Cables

Sometimes the hidden source of your network issues is the networking cables. The cable that connects the router to the wall may be the cause of the blinking yellow light.

You can replace the original wires with any compatible wires that you may have. You can do the previous step of resetting the router again but this time attach the new cables before plugging them back in.

If the yellow light disappears and your router is working now, then the cable may have been damaged. Now buy a replacement cable if you cannot use the one you plugged in for testing.

4. Hard Reset The Router

Sometimes, the configuration of the router is what is preventing it from connecting to the network. Performing a hard reset that returns the router to its factory state and wipes any personal changes can help restore the internet connection.

However, you will need to restore the change you made in the online settings of your router. It needs you to sign in to your Verizon router’s portal and repeat any steps you did earlier.

For instance, if the router was set up to prioritize service or log activity, you should repeat these steps after doing the hard reset.

If the yellow light is due to a Verizon localized service outage, wait until the network is back to implement a hard reset using the following steps:

  • Use an unbent paperclip arm or blunt needle to press the button inside the reset slot which is at the back of the router. Hold it down for about 15 seconds.
  • Release the button then give the router a few seconds to reconnect to the network. Once connected, the yellow light will either be there or not.

If the yellow light is still present and you have confirmed that there is no service outage in your area, contact Verizon and a technician may be able to help you find the source of the blinking.

5. Check Your ONT

Checking Verizon’s ONT can help you get more information on why your router is blinking yellow. The ONT is a box that is used to route service through, and it could be located in the basement, outside the house, or in another appropriate location.

If you understand how networking devices work and know how you can access the ONT, you can hard reset the ONT by pressing the reset button or unplugging it from the power supply and removing the battery.

Wait for about two minutes to put the battery back in then plug it back into the power supply. Once connected, ensure that all the green LED lights are on then turn on your router.

But, if you have to unscrew anything or unlock a box to access it, you should contact Verizon to help you with it.

If there was an issue with the ONT, the yellow blinking should not appear after the reset.

6. Check If The Router Is Overheating

If all the connectors and cables are plugged into the correct ports and are intact, and the ONT is working fine but the yellow light is still blinking, then your router may have overheated.

Even though most routers have precautions on how to prevent them from overheating, some routers can still overheat. A router that is overheated can stop working or have a slow internet connection.

Overheating in routers is caused by clogged or blocked vents which lead to less heat regulation. Ensure that your router’s vents are not clogged up with dust or blocked off by draperies or furniture.

Poor router placement such as being hidden in a drawer, sitting on the floor, etc. as well as dirt and pet hair can lead to poor airflow and clogged vents.

If an overheated router is the cause of the yellow light, then clearing the vents and enabling proper heat dissipation will help solve the problem. If the router is hot when you touch it, let it cool down to room temperature before plugging it back.

If the issue happens regularly, place the router in a location where there is a lot of fresh air and ensure that it is not near solid walls. It should also be away from closed cabins, direct sunlight, or any heated objects.

You should relocate the router as early as possible as overheating can affect both the router’s life and connectivity.

7. Re-Pair Your Router and Extender

The yellow light could be because the WiFi extender and router are still in pairing mode and are not connected yet.

The following are the steps you should take to repair your extender and router:

  • Press and hold for at least 5 to 7 seconds the front buttons of the router and the extender. Now the devices are in pairing mode.
  • The devices are successfully paired if a blue light appears, meaning you are ready to connect to the internet.

8. Check For Router Overloading

Your router could be overloaded if you are using it past its bandwidth limit and this will lead to no or poor internet connection. Check your router from overloading using the following steps:

  • Disconnect all the devices from the router.
  • Reduce the number of devices connected to the router at the same time.
  • Restart your router and wait for a white light.
  • If you have many devices and need higher bandwidth, it is best to get a new Verizon router with enough bandwidth.

9. Update The Firmware

If you have done all the steps mentioned above and your router still has a yellow light, the issue may be in the software and you may be required to do an update. The steps for updating firmware are:

  • Log in to your account on the router’s web page.
  • Check the System Settings section for any updates.
  • If there is one, you should download it and install it.
  • Restart the router when finished, and hopefully the yellow light should be gone.

10. Contact Verizon Support

Finally, if any of the above steps do not work, you should contact Verizon’s technician for help.

They will inspect the router and try to find the issue and solve it. If the issue is not resolved, the technician may help you with replacing the router.

How Do I Factory Reset My Verizon Router?

To manually reset your Verizon router, locate the reset button on the rear of the device, find a small pin-headed item such as a paperclip and hold down the button for 15 seconds. The device will then automatically reset.

If you want to maintain your previous configurations prior to the factory reset, you can backup existing configurations using the Admin WebGUI > System Settings > Backup & Restore.

What Color Should The Verizon Router Light Be?

When the Verizon router is fully functional, the LED light on the router should be solid white.

A white light means the device is powered, connected to the internet and has normal functioning. In this scenario, you should be able to connect and use the internet without any interruptions.

User what is the difference between power cycling and resetting my Verizon router

Power cycling includes disconnecting all power sources from the Verizon router, including unplugging it from the power source.

This process effectively resets the router’s internal components and clears any temporary glitches or issues that may have arisen.

Resetting the router restores it to factory defaults, erasing all configurations. It’s used for more severe issues or to start fresh, initiated by holding the reset button for 10-30 seconds.

What Is The Average Lifespan Of The Verizon FiOS Router?

The typical lifespan of a Verizon FiOS router is approximately 3 to 5 years.

However, this can vary based on factors like usage and environmental conditions. Regular maintenance and updates can help prolong the router’s lifespan.

Final Words

Having a yellow light on your router is a common issue these days.

Thankfully, you can now fix the problem by following the methods mentioned in this article.
